Known Fully by God
Have you ever felt unseen, even in a room full of people?
The Word: Psalm 139:1–6
“You have searched me and known me.” With that one sentence, David confronts one of our deepest longings and fears. We want to be truly known, but we are also afraid of being truly exposed. Yet the God of Scripture does not know us from a distance. He searches and knows His people personally and completely.
David says the Lord knows his sitting down and rising up. God sees the routine, ordinary movements that no one else notices. He discerns your thoughts from afar, long before you can sort them out in your own mind. Before a word is on your tongue, He knows it altogether. That means God has a clearer understanding of what you are about to say than you do. His knowledge is not shallow or partial. It is exact, full, and personal.
This can feel unsettling. If God sees everything, He sees the things you wish were not there: sinful desires (YIKES), divided motives, half-hearted obedience, hidden fears. Yet notice David’s response. He does not run from God. He is amazed. “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” The truth that God knows him completely leads to worship, not despair.
Why can a believer take comfort in God’s complete knowledge and not be crushed by it? Because the God who knows all is the God who saves and keeps His people. He did not discover your sin after He set His love upon you. He knew your entire story before you took your first breath. In Christ, He chose you, not because you were worthy, but because He is gracious. His knowledge is wrapped in covenant love.
The cross makes this personal. Every sin you try to hide was fully seen by God and fully laid on His Son. There are no surprises with Him. When you confess, you are not informing Him of anything new. You are agreeing with what He already sees and has already addressed in Christ. This is why confession can be honest and hopeful. You are brought low, but you are not left there. The One who knows your worst has given you His best in Christ.
This truth also speaks into loneliness. You may feel misunderstood by family, coworkers, or even fellow believers. You may struggle to put your thoughts into words. But your Father never misunderstands you. He surrounds you behind and before. His hand is laid upon you, not as a hand of condemnation, but as a steady, guiding, protecting hand. You are never lost in a crowd to Him.
Let this quiet the need to perform for God’s attention. You already have His full gaze. You do not have to craft a spiritual image for Him to take interest in you. In Christ, you are fully known and fully loved. His intimate knowledge of you is not the prelude to rejection. It is the foundation of His faithful care.
