Anchored in God’s Promises
Where do you instinctively turn when life starts to shake?
The Word: Hebrews 6:17–19
Storms have a way of revealing what we truly trust. When health fails, relationships fracture, or plans collapse, our hearts reach for something solid. Hebrews reminds us that God’s promises are that solid ground. God “desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of His purpose.” He knows how easily we doubt and fear, so He bends low to reassure His people.
God does not only give His word. He backs it up with an oath. This passage tells us that God has given us two unchangeable guarantees: His promise and His oath. These two anchors are meant to give strong encouragement to all who have fled to Him for refuge. God does not need to swear an oath. His word alone is perfectly trustworthy. Yet He chooses to do so for your sake, to quiet your anxious heart. Your assurance does not rest on how tightly you hold to Him, but on how utterly faithful He is to His own word.
Scripture calls this hope “a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.” An anchor holds a ship in place when currents pull and winds blow. The anchor does not remove the storm, but it keeps the vessel from drifting into ruin. God’s promises do the same for your heart. They do not guarantee a life free from hardship, but they guarantee that no hardship can overturn His purpose for you in Christ.
Notice where this anchor goes. It “enters into the inner place behind the curtain.” The image takes us into the very presence of God, where Christ has gone as a forerunner on our behalf. Your hope is anchored in a living Savior who stands before the Father as your representative. He has finished the work of atonement. He intercedes for you. He will not fail to bring you safely home.
When you feel the pull of fear, you do not need vague optimism. You need specific promises applied to your specific situation. Promises that He will never leave you nor forsake you. Promises that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him. Promises that nothing can separate you from His love in Christ. These are not slogans. They are covenant words from a God who cannot lie.
You may still feel the waves and hear the wind, but beneath your feet is a Rock that does not move. You hold to His promises, yes, but more importantly, His promises hold you. Hope is not pretending things are fine. Hope is trusting that the One who makes promises will keep them, even when you cannot see how.
